1st time teaching English via Skype

Well I have been working with a local company in Santiago to update leads list for Pharmaceutical Companies to offer teaching English.

I can't believe the number of companies here in Chile. It is hard to track sometimes due to mergers of companies. Sometimes the name is the same others times they may be come a subsidiary. So this is still in process, but I had the opportunity to teach a person who is a psychologist.

It was kind of scary, but was fun as we both learned about each other and other topics. I had some help from the person I work for as this was my first time. So we shall see how this goes.

Have a great weekend

Happy 4th of July

Happy 4th of july

Well Happy 4th of July to all our family and friends in  the US. It will be a laid back day for us, here in Chile. The weather has become much cooler and we have snow in the mountains.

We may have some friends come over and will have a picnic (inside of course) of hot dogs, chips and barbecue chicken.

Well take care and be safe.

God watches over dumb people.....

Well as the title says, God watches over us dumb people. I was going to pay our bills today, as Susan is heading for Miami today for a conference.  Well anyway, I got to Jumbo and was getting in line and I reached in my pocket for the bills......oh no.... I couldn't find them. Had I forgotten them at home? I didn't think so... so I backed tracked my way home. I found them in the middle of the road, I guess they had fallen out. Thank God I had found them because my Spanish is not good enough to pay the bills without a current bill. Yes you can pay current bill with a old bill.

I guess I am getting sapping in my old age. I like the song Only Time by Enya, till I saw the movie Sweet November today...how sad, now the song is even more sad.

I thought I would upload some new pictures.

This is a picture of  fruit we have on a plant we have in the backyard. It is called Monstera deliciosa.

Here is a closer picture of the fruit

The fruit is suppose to taste like across between pineapple and strawberry. I'll have to let you know if we try the fruit.

Well I do have work to do, well yard work anyway.

Life...

Well sorry I haven't posted in a while. Basically as the title says... life. That is pretty much where I am right now.  Have had no luck in obtaining a teaching English position, I think in part as I have no degree. Other then that we are doing fine. We are moving into Fall here, the children here have started school so its more nosier in the morning as all the little school bus come to pick up the kids.

Well hope all my friends are well. Write we you can.

One year anniversary

Well it has been one year since I have quit working and moved to Chile. It has been exciting !!!

We are doing well, I do have to admit that there are things I do miss not being in the States. Some of the things I miss are,not in any order:

1. The Internet is not created equal... :(. There are some sites that are not available because I am in Chile, such as Hulu.

2. Which then leads to TV, can see soe shows from US, but do miss watching NASCAR.

2. Kentucky Fried Chicken. We can not get a buck of chicken, mashed potatoes and cole slaw. Here its
Kentucky Fried Chicken - Chile style http://www.kentucky.cl/delivery/familiares.html

3. I do miss work, well actually the people... you know who you are....

4. I do miss driving.. not quite ready to that here, am able to get around by bus and Metro.

Things I don't miss are

1.  All the crazy shootings going on, definitely not a problem here. Here it would be petty thief at best. We have experienced that, as Susan had a necklace rip off her neck.. Wasn't suppose to be wearing it to star with.... Her bike was stolen... we didn't have it locked.

2. Still getting use to how Chileans do business.  They are on their own time schedules, when have something delivered its from 0800 - 2100. Have some thing repaired, tell you three weeks, can be longer,

But other then this things we are getting along. Still working on my Spanish....

Well take care.

Don't known what this is going to cost the water company as they are being find about a $1,000,000 for the last time they had to cut off the water.

Well have a good day

Map of water shortage

Okay..now Sunday maybe..hmm snow looking better..?????

New water cut in Santiago de Chile affects 4 million people

Santiago de Chile, Feb 9 (EFE). - A flood in areas of the mountain range that muddied the river flow caused today a new cut of drinking water in Santiago de Chile, the second in three weeks, affecting about 4 million users.
"At first there were 1.06 million customers.'re Talking about more than 4 million people affected by this cut, almost 80% of the Metropolitan Region (Santiago)," he told Radio Cooperativa the Intendant (governor) in functions, Caterina Klein.
Landslides occurred in the town of San Jose de Maipo, next to the Chilean capital and nestled in the foothills of the Andes, due to an unexpected summer rain more than 4,000 meters of altitude, coupled with snowmelt and high temperatures .
The company Aguas reported around 20.00 pm (23.00 GMT) on Friday that because the rates of turbidity in the water down that sector would require the shutdown of processing plants that supply the capital of 6 , 2 million.
In total, the supply has been interrupted in 25 of the 37 communes (districts) in the Metropolitan Region, and while the company initially announced that the cut would last for 24 hours, today warned that the service could not be normalized until Sunday afternoon.
On Tuesday 22 January, another flood occurred in the same area also forced to shut off for a day, but this time the announcement was made at midnight and many neighbors awoke to the surprise of not having water available.
This time, the court Andinas, controlled by the Spanish Aguas de Barcelona (Agbar), has caused a minor impact to occur on weekends. Also, being summertime, many people are on vacation outside the capital.
Moreover, many buildings have tanks with capacity to supply water to their neighbors for at least a day, and tank trucks are provided for those who have no alternative.
The authorities today have held a coordination meeting in emergency Metropolitan Municipality.
"The turbidity level has gone down rapidly from 380 000 NTU (nephelometric turbidity unit), and we are now at a level of 28,000," said Public Works Minister in office, Lucas Palacios, following that meeting.
"We expect this trend to continue in the company to start processing the water in the coming hours," said Palacios.
He explained that the plants can begin to operate below the 25,000 UNT, although normally operate with a level of 5,000 NTU. In comparison, noted that the emergency occurred three weeks ago reached the 100,000 UNT.
Since last Wednesday the Metropolitan Region of Santiago is maintained with "preventive early warning" for Andean and foothill areas by continuous rainfall, despite the austral summer living this country. EFE

Fun times

Well as my friends in the US are weathering a snow storm, we here are experiencing another water shut off due to mud slide

Flurry in town near the Chilean capital remains isolated 60 people

Santiago de Chile, Feb 8 (EFE). - A flood in the area range from San José de Maipo, Chile close to the capital, maintains tonight about 60 people isolated and trapped several vehicles through mud and water, officials .
According to the National Emergency Office, due to bad weather affecting the Andes, several boulders of snow and mud were recorded mainly in Guayacán and Lagunillas, about 40 kilometers east of downtown Santiago.
An unexpected summer rain to more than 4,000 meters above sea level in the Andes, coupled to high temperatures and melting, caused landslides in several sectors of the small municipality of San José de Maipo.
Meanwhile, the company Aguas Andina reported tonight that according to "their internal protocols of emergency", has established a level of alert because turbidity rates in the water that goes down the sector and warned that several municipalities could face cuts water.
Later reported that the cuts will affect water supply to 22 municipalities for a while at least 24 hours, but gave no figures, the lack of the vital element suffer about two million people.
This is in addition to that which occurred on 21 January when about two million people in the Chilean capital, also of 22 municipalities, left without drinking water after a flood also occurred in the Andes.
Aguas, is the main supplier of water to the city of 6.2 million inhabitants and controlled by the Spanish company Aguas Barcelona (Agbar).
In previous emergencies, the company explained that the Maipo river that descends through the area caters to much of Santiago "and that when the river flow carries mud and water," the court is required.
Since last Wednesday, the Santiago metropolitan region is maintained with "preventive early warning" for Andean and foothill areas by continuous rainfall, despite the austral summer living this country.
This is in addition to that which occurred on 21 January when about two million people in the Chilean capital left without drinking water after a flood also occurred in the Andes Mountains. EFE / Archive
Will provide updates..
Hmm I think I'll take the no water compared to two feet of snow.
Well have a good day,

23 January 2013

Yep.....got water

Yea... water has been restored, that's good, even though we had water on-hand, glad it's back on. Our neighbors came over to get pool water for the toilets....so glad we had our pool. At least it wasn't like the time we were in Maine in the the 'Ice Storm of 98' when we were without power for 10 days.

Well have a great day

Update to Got water........?

Here is a map of areas with no water

Will keep you update, good thing we have bottled water on-hand

Got water......?????

Well exciting day.... no water.....

Well about 2 million people, including me are with out water.  Heavy rains and warm weather have melted snowy packs in the Andes mountains, causing landslides and nearby rivers to flood. The Chilean water utility company Aguas Andinas says that mud, rocks and trees on Sunday forced temporary closure of three purification plants.
Oh well ..who drinks water  anyways... more beer..laugh. Suppose to be back on tonight or early tomorrow, will see. Especially because here, they give you a time and...well, will see.

Have a great day......:)

Happy New Year

Well the new year has begun.

We spent New Year's Eve at the church to watch the fireworks. We got to the church at about 10:00PM, so we played games and had snacks.

The church is a great spot to watch the fireworks because it is right in front of the mountains where they launch the fireworks. By the time the fireworks started the road was really crowed with people waiting for the fireworks to start. It was a great display, it lasted about 35 minutes, seen some awesome.

Then the real excitement, time to go home.....
Well I I said the road was crowded, it seem that Chileans real like to celebrate the New Year so traffic was really bad. We had to hurry to catch the bus as they were going to run till 1:30 AM or so. Well we able to catch the first bus about two blocks from the church. It was not the normal one we catch, which is C01 to Francisco Bilbabo, but this one also went to Francisco Bilbabo. But then we had to catch the next one to home, which is 418 or 429. Well we waited and waited, one of the guys waiting said that the 429 was done but the 418 was coming  Well we waited and still didn't see one. The guy who told us that it was coming left, he took a taxi. So we started to walk, we  had walked about a 1/2 hour or so. It was funny we met the guy who had took the taxi , he was a bus stop again, but we just keep walking. When all the sudden we saw a a bus at the stop light. Susan was able to get his attention and we were able to get on. Yea, it was crowed but we were able to get on. We got home about 2:30 AM. So next year I think we will skip the fireworks.

Well some new news and pictures.
We had some friends from church over for a swimming party. The day started out looking like it was going to be cold, but it warmed up nice. We had fun and food, and played games. Here are some pictures

So as you can see everyone had a great time.  Here a a couple of pictures of a plastic can, you say no such thing?

very strange...

Here a some really cool pictures of tress, miniaturized
